step 1: Find out what story you’re living.

There are five stories we can be in at any given time: Self-Doubt Story, Avoidance Story, Self-Defeating Story, Victim Story, or the Integrated Story.

Take 3 minutes now and see which story is getting the most airtime for you right now.

step 2: respond to two quick questions on mentimeter.

Heads up: this story deals with self-hatred, suicidal ideation, and sexual assault.

Hear Michael share an old German folktale that offers a powerful message about the possibility of restorying our lives.

The workshop was only the beginning.

A short process to remind yourself that someone, somewhere believed in you. Someone, somewhere still does. What do they see? How do they see you?

the five-sentence story.

Instructions from video:

  1. Get a sheet of paper. On it, list five things you would do if you knew you would not fail.

  2. Choose one thing on that list that, right now, feels most compelling. Which one are you drawn to?

  3. Now either flip the sheet over or get a different sheet of paper. Fold the paper into thirds, like you are folding a letter to put in an envelope.

  4. On the left third, draw an image(s) of what you want to do, the thing you want to bring into your life, the thing you want to be different.

  5. On the upper part of the middle section, draw an image(s) of what the obstacles are in your way. What’s holding you back?

  6. On the lower part of the middle section, draw an image(s) of what needs to happen in order to overcome those obstacles.

  7. On the final third, draw an image(s) of what it will be like when it’s done, when you’ve realized your dream/goal, when the change has happened.

  8. Now go back to each section and write a one-sentence description of each of the four sections. For example, the sentences could be as simple as, “I want to do/be…” “The obstacles in my way are…” “In order to get past these, I must…” “Then I will be/feel/do…”

  9. Then add one concluding sentence. You should now have a five-sentence vision story.

When everything feels chaotic around you, what can you do to stay connected, calm, and centered?

Let’s create a “toolbox” of sorts for you.

Over the next 24-48 hours, take notice of moments when you feel present, grounded, content, alive, safe, belonging, etc. What is happening in those moments? Are you in a certain setting (like outside)? Are you in a certain posture, like standing? Are you listening to some music, or talking with someone in particular? Are you repeating a mantra in your head?

Make a list of everything you can think of that helps you feel connected, calm, and centered. It could be big things like going for a run. Or perhaps small things like applying certain hand lotion or lighting a particular candle.

Keep this list visible throughout your day and return to it whenever you need a resource to help you feel rooted in the midst of the ever-shifting sands.
